Transformation Tuesday: It’s the Little Things…
What if I told you that in order to truly transform on your weight loss journey, you need to stop worrying so much about the big picture tasks, and start focusing on the little nuances that consist of making permanent change?
It’s another scorcher here on Long Island, and I write this to you from my parents’ home. Every Tuesday and Friday, I visit my hometown of Port Washington, New York, and work with my grandmother on rehab from hip replacement surgery last summer, and my dad on improving his strength, tone and overall cardiovascular health.
While I was debating what to write about today, I was listening to my 90s rock playlist. In my opinion, the 90s was a great time for rock & roll music, which is just about the only genre that I even like. During this period, there was a band who rose to notoriety named Bush. Gavin Rossdale, the lead singer and guitarist, was married to Gwen Stefani for a long time, and was featured on The Voice a couple of times in case you’re trying to put a finger on who he is…
Anyway, the Bush song ‘Little Things’ came on, and that’s where I came up with today’s topic! It’s funny where motivation can come from :-)
One of the things I’ve done recently is join some weight loss support groups on Facebook. It’s been very interesting getting inside the minds of folks who are either on or about to begin their weight loss journeys. Since I haven’t struggled with my weight in about five years, and I have a true talent of suppressing negative memories, this experience of helping people in these forums has been a great reminder of how difficult it is to simply choose both a fitness and a nutritional methodology, and just get started on your journey in the first place…
One of the most common introductory questions asked in these groups goes something like this: “Hey guys — I’m new to the group! I want to lose 50 lbs and tone up the skin on my underarms… Any suggestions about the best diet to follow, and which workout program to do to reach my goals?’
As you can imagine, a thread like this will grow to be pretty large, with dozens (and sometimes HUNDREDS) of replies with different dietary and fitness recommendations. To me trying to looki at it from a newbie’s perspective, the massive contradictory responses in the thread can definitely overwhelm you even more than you already are, and can make the task even more daunting than it originally was…
Fortunately, you’re reading this, and since I’ve successfully lost 100 lbs and kept it off, all you have to do is listen to me if you want to succeed on your weight loss journey :-p
All half-joking aside, it’s important to understand that 99.9% of people can’t just massively overhaul their current habits. It takes 60 days to form a habit, and often during that period, there’s a gradual weaning off of bad habits, and easing into good ones.
For instance, when I start up with ANY new client, I have them track their food while eating as normal during Week 1, after which I’ll present them their Dietary Analysis. This analysis is specific to the individual, and makes personalized recommendations on what to tweak based upon that person’s current eating habits.
In my opinion, the hardest thing to do when looking to make a permanent physical change is to overcome the feeling of being deprived with your nutrition. We’re so used to ‘indulging’ in sweets, grains and processed foods, that the notion of eating real, whole organic foods really isn’t all that appealing in the beginning. We view these healthier options as bland, tasteless and unsatisfying, which obviously makes us resent the notion of making healthier eating choices in the first place.

The second hardest thing to do is exercise. We wonder if the ‘magic pill’ is CrossFit, or running, or yoga. Let’s take the complexities surrounding the positives and negatives of each exercise practice, and instead focus on one important question: What types of fitness do YOU enjoy?
While exercise is vitally important for health, it’s far from being the most crucial component of losing weight and keeping it off. Coupled with a solid nutritional program, working out can help expedite the process, but it certainly isn’t going to be why you succeed or why you fail on your weight loss journey.
