A Pen Name

In self searching—I always come back to, “what is my life purpose?” I think I’ve discovered it and have written about it extensively. I enjoy telling stories.

But, to tell stories you must write and write a lot. You must also read and read extensively. That is called work. Medium has been assisting me with the writing part. The reading requirement is somewhat of a struggle. Not because I don’t enjoy reading, but like I said, “it requires effort.”

The problem with work is that it’s always on my mind, but not in action. I always think of the unfinished projects. They haunt me. And because of that, I run from them, but not without a sense of failure. The only thing I find enjoyable is writing. Sometimes I write poems. Other times, I write observations. And yet on occasion, I write about my life.

Writing is my escape and my existence. So, the question stands, “how do I turn my passion into financial security?” I recently bought a couple of books on self-publishing. Both books present ways to publish your words directly to an audience and skip the conventional methods. It is a new world after all and Amazon.com exists. The problem again is that it requires a lot of labor.

I’m starting to see the pattern—everything worthwhile requires a tremendous amount of effort, patience and planning. For a lazy person such as myself, that finds it difficult to get out of bed in the morning, this is sheer torture. Why is life so unfair?

OK, OK, in all seriousness, I have decided to get busy. As of two weeks ago, I decided to start working away from home. My thinking is that if I have an office to go to every day, I will become more productive. So far the only thing I’ve noticed is how hard it is to get to the job. I haven’t set up a specific work schedule yet. My only objective right now is to make it to my desk for a few hours a day. So far I’ve only missed one day and that was because of an on-location project.

Today, I strolled in around 14:30. And now, I’m sitting here writing this article. This is OK as I’ve structured my work day as follows: 1 hour of reading, 1 hour of writing, 1 hour of artwork, 1 hour of editing and 1 hour of marketing. This will garner results if I stick with it.

What has been accomplished within the past couple of weeks? I’ve updated my websites, I’ve done a small email blast and redesigned my promotional material, including my business cards. I’ve picked up a new client and have been working with them on a promotional campaign. I’ve started to write a business/marketing plan. And, I’ve been trying to follow my daily one-hour objectives. Nothing is perfect in the beginning, but I’ve heard that if you do something consistently for 30 days it becomes habit. Let’s hope this is true as I really need to grow my business.

I’ve been so focused on making movies the past couple of years that I’ve neglected the reality of making money. I’ve basically been floating on debris and scraps. This is absolutely unacceptable behavior for a grown man with many talents. The movies do count for something, but I need to start leveraging them into a career and not a hobby.

The great thing about movies is that they start out as words that transform into moving pictures. Films are perfect for a person that loves to write. But like I said, “how do I turn my passion into a successful business?” The simple answer is to make sure that my words, whether in written form or in movie mode, bring forth an income. Yes, this is going to be tremendously hard. What else is there? I guess I will be spending more hours at the office—and BLEEDING AWAY AT MY DESK.

Here is where the pen name comes in. Coming from the world of advertising, I understand that presentation is everything. It creates the perception that becomes reality. Some of my favorite pen names include George Orwell (Eric Arthur Blair) and Mark Twain (Samuel Langhorne Clemens). An impressive pen name carries clout and a sense of intrigue. So, I find myself in the search of a cool pen name that will give me a better foothold into the publishing and film world. I’m leaning towards the name Giovanni Halo. Let me know what you think.
